10年くらい前

10年程前のこの季節にカナダのバンクーバー近郊の
割り箸工場へ製造指導に行きました。　香港人の若い人達が
共同出資して経営する工場でした。　カナダ産の良質な原木を
使って高級な割り箸を製造する予定でした。

１０年程前と言えば今よりは随分と市況も良かった訳ですが
それでも中国以外の海外製造の割り箸はことごとく失敗に帰して
いました。　ここの工場も例外では無く、僕が2回目に訪問した時には
すでに閉鎖の危機に瀕していました。

しかし工場の中では香港人、インド人（バンクーバーはアジア系の
移民が多い）ポーランド人、プエルトリコ人など様々な人種の人達が
割り箸の製造に携わっていました。　奇妙な光景でした。　本来割り箸とは
無縁な人達（香港人は除く）が懸命に割り箸を作っているのは感動的で
した。　特に工場長のインド人のアーマッドさん、技術者のポーランド人の
ズベシックさんとの交流は、短い期間ではありましたが忘れることが出来ません。

10日ほどの滞在の間、毎晩どこかのレストランで食事を取りました。
魚介類の美味しさには感動しました。　それらの素材は香港料理や
日本料理とも見事に調和していました。　ドライブの途中で見た
クリスマスのイルミネーションと一緒にこの季節の忘れられない
思い出です。
